Genmaicha translates to brown rice tea, is sometimes referred to as Popcorn tea as many of the rice kernels pop like popcorn during the roasting process.
By blending Japanese Sencha green loose leaf tea with roasted brown rice a sweet grassy taste with a nutty flavour is produced.
Originally in Japan, this green tea was known as the people's tea, the rice was added as a bulking ingredient. As rice is less expensive than tea adding the rice made this tea more accessible to poorer people. Nowadays everyone enjoys the great taste of Gen Mai Cha.
